Francis "Frank" Mulhern - Monday, 9/17/2018

Francis "Frank" Mulhern, 73, of Wilkes-Barre Twp., formerly of Pittston and Wayne, NJ, passed away Monday evening, September 10, 2018, at Highland Park Senior Living, Wilkes-Barre Township.

Born in Philadelphia, he was a son of the late Francis and Anna Lunny Mulhern. Frank was a graduate of Pittston High School, Class of 1962 and also earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in English from Bloomsburg University. He taught for a number of years in the Philadelphia area but left teaching to work in the food industry providing services to a number of corporations and colleges in the Tri-State area.

In 1987, Frank was diagnosed with cancer. Opting for the best possible outcome, he chose to have a lung removed and soon after a kidney. Miraculously he was able to live cancer free until recent years. During those months of recuperation, Frank made his decision to return to education and soon found employment with several public school districts in New Jersey. He spent the majority of his teaching career with the Paterson School District, specifically at Eastside High School, a high school that drew national attention as the subject of the 1989 film "Lean On Me". It was at Eastside that Frank quickly established himself as a leader in and out of the classroom. He garnered a number of community and school awards for leadership and provided mentoring for many young teachers. He was well known for his creativity, inspirational and motivational strategies to be used with at risk students. In addition, he provided quality workshops and In-service programs for the district.

Frank retired from education in 2013 and returned to his Pittston roots to be closer to family. He enjoyed many activities including New York Times crosswords and reading nonfiction books. Frank was a big Yankees fan and avid Jeopardy viewer. He was also a gourmet cook and prepared many a dinner for family and friends. Frank was also a first rate poker player and loved playing at the casino. The highlight of his life in recent years was his son's wedding in Paris. He was especially happy because his closest friends and family attended the trip of a lifetime.

A warm and heartfelt thank you to John and Joanette Weiss, friends of Frank, who were clearly devoted to him and to his cousin, Mary (Mulhern) Miller, who provided unwavering comfort and companionship to Frank this past year. Thank you also to the staffs of Timber Ridge Health Care Center, Celtic Home Health, Compassionate Care Hospice and Highland Park Senior Living for all the love and care given to both Frank and his family.

Frank is survived by his son, Todd and wife, Juliette, New York City; sister, Anne Crevi and husband, Allan, Chicago; brother, Pat and wife, Eileen, Tunkhannock; nephews, Alex Crevi and wife, Gina; P.J. Mulhern and wife, Jessica and Brendan Mulhern.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, September 17, 2018, at 10:00 AM in the Oblates of St. Joseph, 1880 Route 315 Hwy., Pittston, by Fr. Joseph Sibilano, O.S.J..
