Patrick Paul Mulhern - Saturday, 12/13/2025

Patrick "Pat" Mulhern, 74, of Tunkhannock, passed away unexpectedly at home on Monday morning, December 8, 2025. He is survived by the love of his life of 49 years, Eileen Dillon Mulhern.

Born in Pittson, he was a son of the late Francis and Anna Lunny Mulhern. Pat was a graduate of St. John's the Evangelist High School, Class of 1969, where he excelled in basketball and baseball. He earned his Bachelor of Arts Degree in English and Master of Science Degree in Education from Mansfield University. He then earned a second Master of Science Degree in Reading from the University of Scranton and obtained multiple Professional Certificates in English, as a Reading Specialist, as a Supervisor of Reading, and his Elementary and Secondary Principal Certificates.

He was an educator who worked his entire career, 35+ years, at the Tunkhannock Area School District in various positions including as a Reading Specialist, 8th Grade Reading Teacher, Assistant Middle School Principal, and Principal of Mehoopany and Roslund Elementary Schools. He was well respected by faculty and found special enjoyment in creating motivational reading challenges with prizes that included him chasing pigs, playing air guitar in rock-n-roll attire, and being made into an ice cream sundae. He was the spark behind the Cultural Diversity Day program to foster curiosity and inclusivity of different cultures for Tunkhannock students. He collaborated with many colleagues from several school departments and various community resources on organizing the American Hero Day Program for students to write essays on their American Hero. This included the local component for students to write about a personal hero that made a difference in their lives. The honored local hero was then invited to an assembly to hear their essay read by the student.

Prior to retirement, Pat volunteered for many years as a youth baseball, basketball, and soccer coach instilling in his players (and two sons) teamwork, resiliency, and enthusiasm for competition. His motto was "play like a champion and live your life like a champion." He participated in many volunteer and professional organizations such as the Kiwanis Club, Tunkhannock Police Athletic League (PAL), National Education Association (NEA), Pennsylvania State Education Association (PSEA), and Pennsylvania Association of Elementary School Principals (PAESP).

Pat retired from education in 2009 and enjoyed many activities including collecting baseball cards, attending coin shows, watching (and recommending) the latest streaming shows with Eileen, and spoiling his grandsons, Jack and Declan who called him "Paddy." Pat was a big Boston Red Sox, Notre Dame, and March Madness basketball fan. He was an avid reader, loved listening to music (especially his favorite songs on repeat), and watching the sunset at Harvey’s Lake. He could spin a yarn, share a story, or tell a joke that captivated the minds of young and old with a curiosity that knew no strangers. Pat was the point man for all toasts relying on his boundless Irish wit and always giving thanks for his family and their many blessings.

Pat is survived by his wife, Eileen (Tunkhannock, PA); son, Patrick James (PJ) and wife, Jessica (Columbia, MD); son Brendan and wife, Vanessa (Las Vegas, NV); sister, Anne Crevi and husband, Allan (Naples, FL); sister-in-laws Diane Swanek, Marya Halat, Karen Dillon, Peggy Dillon Sposato, Michele Dillon, and brother-in-laws, Edward Halat, James Dillon, and John Sposato; grandchildren, Jack and Declan Mulhern (Columbia, MD); nephews Alexander Crevi, Todd Mulhern, Daniel Swanek, Jimmie Dillon; nieces Marissa Vaccaro, Megan Holland, Katrina Dillon; great niece Kaya Swanek; many great nieces, nephews, and other family members who he loved very much.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Francis Frank Mulhern, his niece, Tara Marie Swanek, and his nephew, Edward James Halat.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. John the Evangelist Church, 35 William Street, Pittston. Everyone attending the mass is asked to go directly to the church on Saturday. Relatives and friends may pay their respects from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at Baloga Funeral Home Inc., 1201 Main St., Pittston (Port Griffith).

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Tunkhannock Public Library, 220 W Tioga Street, Tunkhannock, PA 18657 or Care and Concern Ministries, 35 William Street, Pittston, PA 18640.

Mr. Mulhern was the first teacher I met in 8th grade. I was new to the school and my mom had just died. Mr. Mulhern went out of his way to make sure I was okay. He checked on me periodically in school and said his door was always open if I wanted to talk. He did not even know me but all these years later, I never forgot that. I remember his fun reading class with games and yelling out words in ways we wouldn't forget... INCOGNITO!!! (IYKYK LOL). I heard stories about Mr. Mulhern as a principal about how he advocated for his staff, loved the kids, and no matter what he did the right thing. He was one of the teachers who made an impact on my life and I never forgot him. I am deeply saddened to hear of his passing. My sincerest condolences and sympathies to his wife and family during such a difficult time. I pray you all remember him with love, smiles and laughter. He was definitely one of the great ones.
