Matthew P. Kultys, Sr., 90, of Luzerne, passed away Tuesday, December 22, 2015, at the VA Medical Center, Wilkes-Barre, surrounded by his loving family. His wife, Lorraine H. Mastey Kultys, passed away December 17, 2002.
Born in Wilkes-Barre, he was a son of the late Stanley J. and Lottie Godlewski Kultys. Matthew attended Coughlin High School and received his high school diploma on the GI Bill. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy 31st spearhead Naval Construction Battalion division in Iwo Jima, during World War II. His company received a Unit Citation for bravery under fire.
Prior to retirement, he was employed by Foster Wheeler Corp., Mountain Top. He was a member of Holy Family Parish, Luzerne. Matthew was also a member of the Northeast Slovak Club, Wilkes-Barre and the Lehman Golf Club, Dallas. He was an avid golfer, bowler and Phillies fan.
Matthew was a beloved father, "Grampy", brother and uncle, who was cherished by his family and will be deeply missed by all those who knew and loved him.
Surviving are his daughter, Helen Kultys, with whom he resided; three sons, Matthew P. Kultys, Jr. and wife, Susan, Larksville; Stanley Kultys and wife, Donna, Swoyersville; Joseph Kultys and wife, Sandra, Ashley; Grandchildren, Kristina Coenen, Kasha Kultys, Brandilyn Kultys, Johanna Kultys, Morgan Kultys, Colin and Daniel Kultys; brother, Edward Kultys, Sayreville, NJ; sister, Christine Ferrence, Lancaster; many nieces and nephews.
Matthew was preceded in death by sisters, Lottie Kultys, Ceil Krych, and Lucy Shedlarski.
Relatives and friends may pay their respects during a celebration of Matthew's life on Saturday from 3:00 to 6:00 P.M., at Baloga Funeral Home, Inc. 1201 Main St. Pittston (Port Griffith). Interment will be at the convenience of the family.
