Patrick Gaffney - January 27, 2014

Patrick Gaffney, 47, of Jenkins Township, passed away on Friday January 24th after a long illness.

He was born in Pittston, son of William & Eleanor White Gaffney. Patrick is survived by his wife, Patricia, step-daughter Abril, brother, Bill and his wife, Barbara; nieces, Kelly & Johanna; as well as several uncles, aunts and cousins.

Patrick was a graduate of Pittston Area High School, Class of 1984, where he was an outstanding athlete who excelled in basketball and baseball. He was an accomplished pitcher at every level who achieved great notoriety in the Wyoming Valley in the mid 1980s. Pat's business career was in the distribution management business. Pat's roles included successful stints in Charlotte NC, Jacksonville FL and Baltimore Md., as a supervisor and manager of logistics operations. Pat's career brought him back to Pa in the same capacity until being notified of getting a serious form of cancer about 3 years ago.

Pat, besides being a sports enthusiast, loved spending his younger years being with friends. He had a great sense of humor and was always in the middle of whatever was happening. Pat was always laughing, smiling and joking with his many friends from "the park & the Mini market." He also adored animals and had several pets through the years that he took care of and were very important to him.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, January 27, 2014, at 9:30 A.M. in St. John the Evangelist Church, 35 William Street, Pittston. Interment will be at the convenience of the family. Relatives and friends may pay their respects Monday at the church from 8:45 A.M. until the time of the mass.

Now you don't have to suffer anymore because now you're at peace up there. It was fun having you around but sadly it came to early for your death. I hope you're happy that you're not here suffering with those tumors and cancer. You lived a good life and I am happy that you were my step dad. But I just wish I could've seen you one more time. You were always there for me you got me stuff for all the occasions and I loved you for that. Rest In Peace Patrick Gaffney you will be missed dearly. I love You !

My prayers go out for Pat's wife and family, Mr. and Mrs. Gaffney, Bill Jr. and family for their huge loss of a fine decent husband, father, son, brother, uncle and man. I have not seen Pat in many years but talk about Pat often and will continue to do so when chatting about baseball. I cherish the memories of catching the best pitcher I had the honor of playing with as a teammate. I loved his competitive nature while he kept it fun. My memories of Pat will always make me smile. Friend, Rest in peace with the Lord!

My name is Michael Shambora and I played basketball with Pat at the Kingston Recreation Center for many years. He was always a pleasant individual and, unlike some of the fellows, he was always unselfish and playing with him was enjoyable. When I saw his picture in the obituaries I yelled, aloud, "Oh, no!" My wife heard me say that and wondered about my outburst... I told her the story and immediately called Francis Curry, who also played BB with us. Pat's death equates to a loss for a bunch of basketball players in the area, very good ones, who know Pat rather well. Playing ball with someone is among the best means to ascertain the character of an individual - AND THAT'S WHY I'M WRITING THESE WORDS --- TO LET THE FAMILY KNOW THAT A NUMBER OF US GRIEVE WITH YOU. His passing is sorrowful to all of us... Michael Shambora, 14 Cherrywood, Laflin 371-8123

He was a free spirit. You remember the people who treat you well. When we played basketball together he was one who helped you off the court floor. I wish his family comfort in this sad time of remembrance.

I last saw Pat on graduation day, 1984. He will forever remain in my mind, that kind, generous Soul. He was never without a smile & was thoughtful & gentle. He was greatly loved & will undoubtedly be greatly missed. He was one of many who made those magical times of adolescence so special.
